Rjukan: mirrors that brought the sunlight to the city and WWII history. A cidade norueguesa que construiu espelhos pra trazer o sol.

Last year, we visited Rjukan, a city with historical importance from World War II and the extravagant mirrors. It’s much more than a typical cute Norwegian city with a beautiful landscape.

Rjukan is located in a deep valley called Vestfjord, in Telemark. The city is surrounded by steep mountains. In the Winter, the sunlight doesn’t reach the city due to the angle. That’s why the giant mirrors were build, to reflect the sunlight to Rjukan’s main square.

We visited Rjukan in the Summer, and it was a very nice day. We were impressed by how the city was built. Nice standard houses for the factory employees, and huge houses for its owners. It was build to please everybody and to be functional. The main square and its surroundings are beautiful. There’s a giant chess game outdoors among other attractions.

History. Rjukan was built by Hydro’s founder Sam Eyde at the beginning of the last century. Have you heard of the tungvannet/ heavy water? The Germans wanted to build the atom bomb just like the allies. There was a rush to get it done first. The one who did it would win the war. Well, they had invaded Norway and were developing the atom bomb project in Rjukan. Some brave Norwegians sabotaged their project and you know the rest of the history. Os espelhos gigantes. A cidade de Rjukan fica em um vale entre montanhas muito altas e inclinadas, no estado de Telemark, na Noruega. Durante cinco a seis meses do ano, a angulação dos raios do sol e o posicionamento da cidade impedem os raios do sol de chegarem até Rjukan. Isso sempre incomodou os habitantes. Havia um projeto de espelhos no início do século XX mas que perdeu votos e em seu lugar, foi construído um bondinho para levar as pessoas até o alto da montanha. Há poucos anos, finalmente, os espelhos gigantes foram instalados no alto de uma das montanhas, de forma a refletir a luz do sol diretamente para o centro da cidade, bem na praça. Jornalistas do mundo todo vieram registrar a notícia.

Rjukan, porém, tem importância histórica que pouca gente conhece. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, os alemães e aliados corriam contra o tempo para produzir a bomba atômica. Os alemães tinha ocupado a Noruega e consequentemente a fábrica de água pesada de Rjukan. Pra quem ainda não sabe (eu não sabia) água pesada é um componente de fabricação da bomba atômica. Quem conseguisse fabricar a bomba primeiro, venceria a guerra. Um grupo de noruegueses que era obrigado a trabalhar para os alemães, conseguiu sabotar o projeto do governo da Alemanha. O resto da história a gente sabe. Os aliados venceram a guerra. Fiquei arrepiada ao passar de carro na frente da fábrica de água pesada.
