When I do bed time with my child, if the book she chooses is in Norwegian, I translate to Portuguese while I read it out loud for her. My brain got used to it. I never read in Norwegian to her because I only speak Portuguese when I speak directly to my child. Though reading a book in Portuguese is much easier for me, of course. In addition, the child gets familiar with our homeland’s typical stories, legends, expressions, our tradition.
When children have learned to read and write in Norwegian, they can start to read books in your original language. (Some bilingual schools do the first year in local language and the second language is presented in next year). My American cousins who are teenagers now, are used to reading whole books in Portuguese. And so do my best friend’s son at the age of 9 (he reads in German). It’s never too early to start.
How to get hold on these books? Through the libraries all over Norway.
Netflix in your language of origin. I’ve recently found out that golden tips. Did you know that you can have one of your Netflix profiles in a different language than the others? You can have most profiles’s audio in Norwegian, for example, and only one profile for the kids to watch the films in Portuguese. That’s what I did. I think it’s excellent for my child to be familiar with the typical children expressions since she doesn’t get to play much with Brazilian children. It’s great to increase the children’s vocabulary. Check the step by step:
1- Log in your Netflix account on your computer.
2- Click on profiles and click on Manage profiles. Select one of your profiles to be edited. (You can add an extra profile just for your homeland’s language if you like. There’s a + sign Add a profile option).
3- When editing a profile click on language. There will be all language options. Scroll down until you find your homeland’s language. Click on your desired language and click on save.
4-That’s it. Whenever you switch to that profile, all the cartoons and films will be automatically played on that selected language.

Oi pessoal que tem a língua portuguesa como língua de origem! Vocês leem para seus filhos pequenos na hora de dormir? Eu leio somente em português. Mesmo que o livro seja em norueguês, eu sempre traduzo na minha cabeça e já falo em português pra ela. Claro que ler um livro já escrito em português é muito mais relaxante pra mim. Além disso; nossos filhos podem ter contato com ícones da nossa cultura, como o Saci Pererê, por exemplo.
Quando eles já leem sozinhos, vale a pena apresentar livros em português. É importante. Eles simplesmente tem dois idiomas como nativos, funciona muito bem. Eu tenho primos bilíngues que leem livros complexos em português, sendo eles adolescentes americanos. O filho da minha melhor amiga lê livros em português e só tem 8 anos. O hábito da leitura é fundamental para construir o raciocínio lógico, tornar a língua portuguesa mais consistente e também estimular a criatividade.

Netflix em português. Você sabia que mesmo morando no exterior a gente pode selecionar um dos perfis da Netflix e colocar o áudio em português? Eu descobri isso recentemente. Eu adorei essa possibilidade para as crianças que não tem muitas chances de brincar com crianças brasileiras. É ótimo para as elas pegarem expressões tipicamente brasileiras e melhorar o vocabulário. Veja o passo-a-passo:
1- Faça o login da sua conta da Netflix no seu computador.
2- Entre em perfis. Editar perfis.
3- Vai aparecer na tela os seus perfis e o sinal de + Adicionar perfil.
4- Clique no perfil que deseja editar e veja a opção selecionar idioma. Vai aparecer uma lista com vários idiomas. Selecione português, clique em salvar e pronto.
