I love New Year’s Eve. A brand new year is ahead of us, with new opportunities to be happy. I make a list of this year’s best moments, my mistakes and how I can improve. I also write my New Year’s resolution.

Brazilians usually go to clubs, beaches, parks, to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
As I grew up in Brazil, I am used to some traditional rituals for bringing luck and happiness to the new year. You can call it superstition. I call it fun.

In Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, around 3 million people gather, wearing white, to celebrate and wish each other peace and happiness in the year to come. At the stroke of midnight, there’s the display of fireworks which lasts almost 20 minutes while classical music is played.

White clothes bring peace. It’s like you purify yourself to enter in a new year.

Putting flowers in the sea is an offer to Yemanja, the Goddess of the water, also known as Virgin Mary (by the Christians). It is a way to thank her for the past year and make wishes for the next one. Gratitude and positive thoughts. Why not?

Eating grapes and lentils, jumping 7 waves, or jumping only on your right foot when clock strikes midnight should bring good luck and prosperity.

In Norway, there’s fireworks in the cities, like in many countries in the world. However, most Norwegians throw private parties at home or at cabins in the mountains, since it’s the ski season. No special colors, but everybody dresses up, gathers, celebrates and have positive thoughts.

The food is good and special, like on Christmas. It’s Winter here, so instead of white clothes, it’s nature itself who wears white.

Being with the ones you love is the best way of celebrating new year.
I wish you all the best in the decade to come. Happy 2020!!

  1. For me the most important things in the celebrations of a new year is the feeling of renovation and the intention to be a better person from now on and also to be surrounded by people you love .

    1. Well said, Rosa Maria. The new year will be better if we are better people. Thank you for your comment. Happy New Year!
