Midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that can be seen in Norway. It means the sun stays above the horizon, and then it rises again. It happens in the Summer, above the Arctic Circle. The cause is the angle of the North Pole toward the Sun.
Midnight sun can be seen from 12th of June till 1st of July (Arctic Pole). Up North the Arctic Circle, the natural phenomenon lasts longer. Colors are more vivid in the midnight sun. Some enthusiasts go kayaking, boating, whale watching, camping.
We tried to see the Midnight Sun some years ago, in Tromsø. There was the Midnight Sun half marathon which brought runners from all over the world. It was warm, nice and… cloudy. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see it. As Tromsø is such a charming city, we’ll try again. 😉
In Stavanger, which is in the South West coast, sunset is about 10:50 p.m. in June. Nights are bright and there are many advantages. We feel more active and enjoy the evenings outside at the terrace, balcony, garden. It’s lovely to come back home from a friend’s house, breathing the fresh air when it’s still bright. The continuous daylight may give some parents a headache when they need to put their children to bed, though.
The Summer Solstice is when the Earth’s pole has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. It’s the longest day in the year.
Each year, on the Summer Solstice, there’s a special Norwegian celebration called Santkhans (Midsummer eve) . It happens in June, between 18th and 23rd (varies from year to year). Its origin is from the catholic day to celebrate Saint Johannes. In Norway though it’s more like a popular fest than a religious one. The celebration is about the sunlight, warmth, longer days and the proximity to Summer holidays. The year’s longest day is actually a couple of days before. Actually, Sankthans’ origin in ancient Norwegian legend Norrønt (Norse) means “stay awake for Johannes”. They celebrate the evening before the actual date.
My husband tells me that in his childhood, the Sankthan celebration was a big day for the children. All neighborhood came to the nearest beach. There was a huge bonfire. They ate hotdogs, cookies and got soda and juice to drink. There was a good smell in the air. A mix of: fresh sea air smell with the burnt wood and smoke, the hotdogs and mosquito repellent. Children got to stay awake longer than usual. Later in the evening, the adults would have a party with music and dance. Nowadays, the tradition remains. The celebration still happens by the sea. It’s still a family party, popular among children.
In many cities like Oslo, for example, in different beaches, there’s bonfires, concerts and activities for children like face painting, flower wreaths, dancing. People arrive from 6 p.m. but the concert and bonfire start at 10 p.m. It’s a family party. People come also in boats to see the bonfire and participate from the sea.
Those who wish to make a bonfire at public places must apply first. For making a bonfire in the Stavanger municipality, you can apply here. Last day to apply is June 20th.
This year, 2021, it will occur on June 23rd, a Wednesday. The Summer solstice itself is on the 21st, but the Sankthans celebration is on the 23rd. It’s not an official holiday, all offices and stores will be open as usual. I have checked that many public celebrations have been cancelled this year, due to Corona pandemic. Just like last year. That’s a pity. Though the sunlight hasn’t bee cancelled. So enjoy it from your terrace, with your family. Next year we all hope there will be public celebrations again.

A localização da Noruega, bem ao norte do globo terrestre, faz com que ela receba a luz do sol por mais tempo no verão, devido à angulação da Terra. Ao norte do Círculo Polar Ártico, acontece o fenômeno do sol da meia-noite.
O Sol da meia-noite é um fenómeno natural onde o sol é visível por 24 horas do dia, nas datas próximas ao solstício de verão. O sol fica baixo, na linha do horizonte, mas se levanta novamente, nunca se põe. O número de dias do ano com sol de meia-noite é maior, quanto mais próximo se está do pólo.
A duração é mais ou menos entre 12 de junho a 01 de julho, bem no Círculo Polar Ártico. Costuma durar mais tempo, ainda mais ao Norte. Muitos entusiastas aproveitam a linda vista, com cores vivas no céu, e andam de caiaque, velejam, fazem passeios de barco para ver baleias, acampam.
Nós tentamos ver o sol da meia-noite há uns anos atrás, em Tromsø. Era época da maia maratona do sol da meia-noite. Tinha corredores do mundo inteiro. A temperatura era muito agradável, flores por toda parte, e também… muitas nuvens. Infelizmente não conseguimos ver o sol da meia-noite. Como Tromsø é uma cidade super charmosa, devemos voltar e tentar de novo em outra oportunidade.
Em Stavanger, que fica na costa sudoeste da Noruega, os dias são bem longos. O sol se põe por volta das 22:50. Toda essa claridade, nos dá uma energia e motivação pra fazer passeios, jantar no terraço, cuidar do jardim. Só que, além dos adultos, as crianças também ficam mais ativas no verão. Às vezes é difícil convencê-las a ir pra cama em plena luz do dia. Haja cortina.
São João na Noruega. Sim, aqui também temos a tradicional festa de São João. Chama-se Sankthans. Aqui na Noruega, a celebração começou por iniciativa da igreja católica, mas hoje em dia a conotação não é religiosa. É a celebração da luz do sol, dos dias mais longos, do calor, da proximidade das férias de verão. A festa acontece em toda a Noruega, na noite anterior ao Solstício de verão (o dia mais longo do ano). Geralmente acontece na praia, já que o país tem uma costa vasta e bela. Fogueiras imensas, música, atividades para crianças, cachorro-quente, sucos, muita alegria para a família toda.

Eu li que esse ano também, devido à pandemia do Corona vírus, muitos eventos públicos foram cancelados. É realmente uma pena, mas como o sol não foi cancelado, você pode fazer sua pequena comemoração em casa, no terraço, ou mesmo na praia. 🙂 Esperamos que no próximo ano, eu já tenha fotos e vídeos particulares da comemoração pra vocês.
