Clothes, shoes, decoration objects can be very expensive here in Norway. That’s why end-of-season sales are a great deal. You can find seriously discounted prices. I’ve just bought nice Winter boots for 199 kr. The original price was 500 kr. It’s amazing. My friend from Brazil went crazy here in January.

Parents can buy all Winter accessories for their children for the next year. It may be difficult to predict what size shoes they will be wearing a year from now, but gloves, mittens, rain jackets and pants you can totally tell.

My advice is that you plan ahead and do some research. I’m not a bargain hunter, but when I’m interested in buying something, I go window shopping first or check the store’s website. If you are used to checking prices, you’ll know if the discounts are for real.

Some products are rarely on sale, like wool clothes for children, some brands of down coats or children’s athletic shoes. Some of those stores have specific dates for discounts. Then it can be useful do subscribe to their newsletter.

A very useful site is Prisjakt. It compares prices. Just enter the article name.

In Norway, Winter sales are usually in January while Summer sales are in July/August. Last Summer, I made nice purchases. Books, clothes, even shoes are affordable now. And what I think is most intriguing: promotions on sunscreens. 3 for 2, 50% discount in all pharmacies. In June!! In Brazil is the opposite. Prices only go down after the Summer. So enjoy!!

Black Friday has also come to Norway. At the end of November, all sorts of items have discounts, not only electronics. This year, 2021, it’s on the 26th. What to buy? Aim for electronics. It’s a safe bet that prices will really go down. Just compare prices from before, so that you don’t be fooled. Another good tool is the site prisjakt.no They compare prices.
You should check the shop’s website because some are already starting early Black Friday.

If you’re not in a hurry to prepare for Christmas, you can find many Christmas decoration items 50% Off a week before Christmas. Or you can buy all Christmas stuff right after Christmas, for the next year. I think it’s worth it as Christmas comes for sure every year.

Romjul is the period between Christmas and New Year’s. The sale starts already on December 27th. Expressions you’re going to see: romjulsalg, januarsalg, vintersalg. An important expression to learn in Norwegian: frifrakt. It means free shipping.

Another good way of saving money is buying second hand clothes and toys online. And it’s environmental friendly. There’s Marketplace on Facebook and other groups, more regional. Finn.no also has all types of second hand things. You can contact the salesperson directly. There you can find excellent Winter clothes, for example, or kindergarten clothes for a good price. It’s so easy. Nowadays everybody accepts Vipps. Another alternative to buy second hand clothes is Fretex. People donate clothes and Fretex washes and prepares them to be sold at low prices at their stores. You can find all sorts of clothes, furniture, books, toys and utensils. You can check their website here.

Selling children’s clothes is also good for the seller. You get rid of those clothes and toys your children don’t wear or play with anymore. I have bought second hand children books from vintage collections like Sesame Street. Most of them were in good state and very cheap. I have also sold used sports items for a fair price. It’s very important to be honest about the state of the product. I’m glad it works well here in Norway.

  1. Ju. Otimas dicas!! Tenho seguido seu blogue e gosto muito. Admiro você por escrever sobre suas experiências. Eu passei por situação semelhante quando me casei com um Canadense- Americano em 1982 e me mudei para O Canada. Me vejo em muitas coisas q vc escreve. Continue este lindo trabalho de incentivar e ajudar outras pessoas na mesma situação e ensinar aos “ de fora” como é fazer sua vida nova fora do seu país. Bjs 😘
