Today is May 2nd. Spring has come and so has barbecue season. It’s part of the Norwegian culture to grill food in the Spring and Summer on a daily/weekly basis. Spring smells like barbecue.

Norwegians spend more time outdoors from April to September, and they eat meals outside as well. Grilling is practical as it doesn’t take much time and the food tastes good. 😋

We can see professional and disposable grills everywhere: at parks and forests, beaches, at people’s terrace and backyards. Norwegian families are used to going to parks where there are some grilling places with stones and grids. Two weeks ago, we went to a park by the sea. It’s called Møllebukta. It was 21 C. There were lots of small groups of people (teenagers, families with small children and a cute group of elegant old ladies). And there they were: grills. I saw three of them. A professional grill and two disposable ones.

Disposable grills are sold at supermarkets. They are light and easy. You can take them anywhere, as long as you always use a rack under it, never place it directly on the ground. After use, it only can be thrown away in a special marked container, never in “normal” garbage bin.

There’s general bonfire ban from April 15th till September 15th. During this period it is forbidden to light up fire and grill (also disposable grill) in or near forests. Exceptions are after a rain or snow, or in specific places approved by the authorities. Check before you choose where to have your bbq.

You can grill on your own backyard, unless there’s a specific prohibition. Ex: last year it was so dry that the government prohibited grilling and even watering the plants outside, as there was shortage of water.

Recipes. Well, I’m not an expert. What I see Norwegians grill most is: chicken, sausage, hamburgers, fish, vegetables. You can use those wooden or steel sticks, and aluminium forms. Supermarkets’ websites have good recipes. Grilling can be healthy. I love the distinguish taste of grilled vegetables.
