If you have been reading my blog for a while, you probably know that I live in Stavanger, the oil capital in Norway.

On my first year living here, I got a job at ONS as an interpreter. I accompanied a group of Brazilian oil engineers and geologists at the conference center and on field trip on the way to Kristiansand. It was an enriching experience. Back then I had a tiny clue of this huge market and its importance in our daily lives. I find it fascinating. I’m glad that specialists are focusing on renewable energy.

What is ONS? It’s biannual conference in oil and energy. It always takes place in Stavanger. ONS stands for Offshore Northern Seas. Conferences are in English.

When and where? It takes place in Stavanger, every other year, in August. It’s never been as big as now in 2022. The number of visitors expected is 60.000 from 100 countries. This years theme is Trust.

During the day, there are conferences at 10 pavilions located in Tjensvoll conference area. Energy companies have stands with product and services display, innovation is shown to visitors. There are lots of networking opportunities.

2022 ONS’s message (so far and as I have researched) is to search and value renewable energy at the same time responsible oil exploitation. Reducing exploitation is a goal, though it can’t be done gradually. I have seen authorities stand reasonably this way. Newest conferences are about a new form of storing carbon so that it won’t be released onto the atmosphere.

The celebrities. This ONS’s most expected visits was world’s richest man: Elon Musk, Tesla owner. He was here yesterday and sai to a crowded in a conference hall that he thanked Norway for its efforts to support and promote electric energy. His words: “I just want to thank the leaders and people of Norway for the long-term support for electric cars and renewable energy and say, hey, you’ve really made a difference.”

Stavanger Sentrum on ONS. The new ONS wants to make it accessible for everyone. Downtown, by the docs, you find stands, debates, etc.

Can I attend? Sure. There are conferences open to the audience. The cheapest ticket costs 600 NOK.

My experience and why I recommend you to visit ONS: When I was there, the atmosphere was positive, engaging, and you get to do valuable networking. So if you work in this area and are looking for job opportunities or to learn from the huge professionals, then go for it.
