Music is magical. It fills up the air with Christmas atmosphere. I have created a Spotify playlist called Feel Good Christmas Songs by Juliana Linares Øverland. Feel free to listen by clicking here.
Here on the blog, I have listed only those sung in Norwegian or by Norwegians to inspire you. It’s actually a great training if you are learning the language.
I’d like to share my Christmas playlist with you 🙂
My super favorites are number 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 15, 17, 19, 20. Which is your favorite? I’d love to read your comment.
1. Jeg så mamma kysse Nissen. I saw mamy kissing Santa Claus. You have to listen to the Norwegian version. It’s so much cuter. Children here really react to this song by saying: Ash!! (Ugh). 🙂
2. Santa Lucia. It’s so cute that Norwegian children celebrate St. Lucy on December 13th. Both songs are beautiful.
3. I wanna go home for Christmas, from Maria Mena. She is an awesome singer. At first, I used to feel homesick when I listened to this song. Now I purely enjoy it, as I feel more comfortable spending Christmas in Norway.
4.Himmel på Jord. Kurt Nielsen. “Heaven on Earth.” This song gives me so much hope! I really like it. Here’s the translation for you. I stumbled around in the blackest night Then you lit the star with light from you I felt lonely and empty and abandoned When you showed up you thought of me I shivered and froze when you gave me your warmth You saw that the earth was bare and cold You longed for me, and you sent me the baby And showed me the way to a stable Heaven on earth A joy so great I’m alone Here I live Heaven on earth A grace so great I’m alone Here I live I fought and I suffered, did everything to win Then I heard the angels singing about peace Put your weapons down, it’s Christmas you have to find A peace inside the heart somewhere Heaven on earth A grace so great I’m alone Here I live Heaven on earth A grace so great I’m alone Here I live Everytime…
5.Tenn Lys. Light a candle. It’s beautiful song about empathy and solidarity. My favorite version is sung by Helene Bøksle. You can watch the videoclip here. I’d like to seize the opportunity to light a candle for the victims of the Corona pandemic. In Norway like some other countries, we light one candle each of the four Sundays in advent before Christmas. For each Sunday, there’s a nice verse about who we light the candles for.
6. En Stjerne Skinner I Natt. A Star shines tonight. Performed by Nordic Tenors. Such beautiful lyrics and melody. It’s my favorite this year. Since I heard my children sing it, I became enchanted. And so will you probably be.
7. Julenatt. Christmas night. It’s nice opportunity to try to learn Norwegian as you probably know the lyrics in English.

9. Julekveldsvissa. Super cute for children.
10. Hei Hå Nå Er Det Jul Igjen. Hey, Ho, Now It’s Christmas Again.
11. Julenissen Kommer I Kveld. Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
12. Musevisa. It’s a proper Norwegian word. Very traditional song for children, from Alf Prøysen. About a little family of mice on Christmas time. Link to video with lyrics here. Good to practice the language.
13. Jul I Svingen. Christmas around the corner.
14. Snømannen Kale. Sowman Kale.
15. Rudolf Er Rød På Nesen. Rudolph, the Red Nose Reindeer.
16. Under Treet. Under the Tree. I love the rhythm. It’s so joyful.
17. Stjernestøv. Star Dust. Do you remember the incredible voice that calls Elsa in Frozen 2? Yep. It’s her: Aurora. This songs belongs to the soundtreck of a Christmas tv series for children.
18.Glade Jul. Silent Night. Classic.
19. Selmas sang (Fra Snøfall). This one is typical Norwegian trend if you are curious about the Norwegian music style. The song is from a tv children’s Christmas series soundtrack. Video here.

20. På Låven Sitter Nissen. This is super Norwegian. It’s about Santa Claus sitting and eating his porridge. You know, porridges are traditional in Norway, specially in the Winter. This one in the song is called Christmas porridge. Check the animation here.
